2010 Parade

Hop, Skip and a Jump

This year's parade is a celebration extraordinary journeys, real and imaginary. Join us and make your own, migrating animal, horse, car, hot air balloon, sea creature or space alien.

Section One: Migration Mambo
Section Leader: Alison Duddle

Migration Mambo

The first section is about the amazing annual journeys of animals. Featured are Canadian geese (on stilts and built on bikes), penguins (on feet and scooters), shoals of salmon, monarch butterflies, families of whales and migration mambo carnival dancers. Also making a cameo appearance are birds who have lost their way due to the distractions of mobile phone signals. The section colours are black, white, pink and browns.

Section Two: Do the Locomotion
Section Leaders: Theo Wickenden with Andrew Kim

Do the Locomotion

Our second section is about the way people move. In this section, you can be a horse, cars, trains, boat, helicopter, join a fleet of red arrows or make a hot air balloon. There will also be a set of giant feet built for this section. The section colours are red, blue and purple.

Section Three: Fantastic Journeys
Section Leader: Kerith Ogden

Fantastic_Journeys

Our last section is about journeys of the imagination. In this section, you can be a space alien in a flying saucer, robots with rockets and planets, or a sea creature around a giant squid. The section colours are green, yellow, fluorescent pink/yellow/green, gold and chrome.

Or, make your own idea based on our theme!

Come to our open workshops and we'll provide you with materials, instructions and a space where you can make a mess.

If you'd like to make your own costumes outside of our workshops and join us on parade day, please remember our two rules: No words or logos. No motorisied vehicles.

Parade Theme and Sections

Each year, our parade is born from an open community consulation where we decide on a theme for the year. The lead artists then design parade sections based on the theme. Each section includes larger central images designed by the lead artist and/or created in Parade Skills Classes and several ensembles created in Open Workshops and Outreach Workshops.

The 2008 parade, "Deluge of Delight", was about the river and canal in our valley and all the animals who are nutured by them. The 2009 parade, "The Glorious Garden Party", was about all the plants and creatures found in our gardens.
